Tactical Boots
Combat and tactical boots carry heavy loads over rough ground for long hours, which puts the feet at risk for blisters, stress fractures and Achilles and plantar fascia strain. These makers build boots for U.S. military, law enforcement and serious outdoor use. Here is what the military standards mean, followed by the boots.
Berry Amendment
Federal law (10 U.S.C. 4862) requires boots bought by the Defense Department to be made in the United States from U.S. materials. "Berry compliant" boots meet that rule.
AR 670-1
The Army's uniform rule for optional combat boots calls for coyote brown, 8 to 10 inches high, cattlehide leather and/or nylon uppers, a plain toe, and a rubber or polyether polyurethane outsole. Unit rules can be stricter.
MIL-SPEC boots
Issue boots are built to detailed military specifications, such as MIL-DTL-32237 for the Army hot weather combat boot, which set materials, construction and testing.
Branch approvals
The Marine Corps certifies boots for uniform wear (EGA-marked), and the Navy publishes an approved boot list for its working uniform. Check your branch's current list.
Belleville
Family-owned since 1904 and a long-time supplier of U.S. military boots. Its made-in-USA, Berry-compliant line includes hot weather combat boots like the C390.
Rocky
Rocky's S2V line includes made-in-USA, Berry-compliant combat boots, alongside lighter tactical and duty boots.
Danner
Danner's Reckoning USMC EGA boot is certified for Marine Corps uniform wear, made in the USA and Berry compliant. Its Tachyon line is a lightweight duty boot.
Bates
A long-time military boot maker, including U.S. Army contracts such as the mountain combat boot, with uniform, tactical and duty styles.
Garmont Tactical
The T8 series, such as the T8 Bifida and T8 Falcon, is built on mountain-boot construction. Coyote versions meet AR 670-1, and the 8-inch shaft meets the Army height rule.
LOWA
German-made tactical boots like the Zephyr and Elite Evo, popular with special operations units. Check the height: mid-cut models are too short for AR 670-1.
Salomon Forces
Salomon's military line, including the Quest 4D Forces, adapts its mountaineering boots for load-carrying and rough terrain.
5.11 Tactical
A/T and Speed series tactical boots for law enforcement, military and first responders, many with side zips.
Oakley Standard Issue
Oakley's Light Assault Boot is sold through its Standard Issue program for verified military, law enforcement and first responders.
Under Armour
The Valsetz is a lightweight, athletic-style tactical boot. Coyote 8-inch versions are made for AR 670-1 wear; black and gray are not uniform-authorized.
Merrell Tactical
Tactical versions of Merrell's hiking boots, such as the MQC and Moab tactical lines, for duty, training and the outdoors.
Compliance depends on the exact model and color, and uniform rules change. Check the product listing and your unit's current guidance before buying for uniform wear.
