This website was created by a Board-Certified Foot & Ankle Surgeon with over 25 years of medical & surgical experience. He spent years treating everything from diabetic foot complications to sports injuries. He created this website to share information about some of the products that he recommends to his own patients, all in one place.

Why this website exists

I got tired of pointing patients to health care products that I believed to be available in some pharmacies and retail stores, only to find out that my patients either bought the wrong product, or the right product was not available for their health condition.

Every week in clinic I write or type out the same shortlist on a prescription to give to a patient β€” a brace, a bunion pad, arch support orthotics, a night splint, diabetic-safe socks, a knee sleeve. This is that shortlist, written down properly and sorted by condition, so you can find the same things I'd point you to without waiting for an appointment.

Whatever brought you here β€” a stubborn callus, a swollen ankle, aching shins, or a diabetic foot check you've been putting off β€” start with your condition below. This covers the whole lower leg, not just the foot. Nothing on this website is a substitute for a medical exam by a qualified medical professional. However, it is a starting point for obtaining health-related products for common, non-urgent conditions effecting the toes, feet, ankles, lower legs, and knees.

01 Β· Built for daily protection

Diabetic Foot Care Essentials

Diabetic feet need daily attention, not just clinic visits. These are low-risk, non-restrictive products I recommend for reducing pressure points, protecting skin, and catching problems early β€” not a substitute for regular diabetic foot exams.

Seamless Β· Non-binding

Diabetic Crew Socks

Non-binding tops and seamless toe closures reduce pressure points and friction β€” a simple daily habit that helps protect sensitive skin.

View on Amazon β†’
Extra depth

Extra-Depth Diabetic Shoes

Wider, deeper toe boxes accommodate custom inserts and reduce rubbing β€” one of the highest-impact changes for preventing skin breakdown.

Skin care

Diabetic Foot Cream

Urea-based moisturizer for dry, cracked skin β€” a common entry point for infection if left unmanaged. Avoid applying between the toes.

View on Amazon β†’
Daily inspection

Long-Handled Foot Mirror

Makes it easier to spot cuts, blisters, or color changes on the sole and heel early β€” especially helpful with limited mobility or flexibility.

View on Amazon β†’
Safe trimming

Diabetic-Safe Nail Clippers

Wider jaw and ergonomic grip designed to reduce the risk of nicking sensitive or thickened skin during routine nail care.

Some patients with diabetes or poor circulation should not clip their own toenails β€” even with diabetic-safe clippers β€” and should have this done by their podiatric physician. Please check with your physician before attempting to clip your own toenails.

02 Β· Alignment & pressure relief

Bunions & Hammertoes

Conservative options for mild-to-moderate discomfort β€” padding and spacers ease pressure, but a progressing bunion or rigid hammertoe is worth an exam to discuss whether surgery makes sense.

Cushioning

Gel Bunion Pads & Sleeves

Cushions the bunion joint against shoe pressure β€” an easy first step for mild irritation.

View on Amazon β†’
Nighttime

Bunion Splint (Night Use)

Holds the big toe in a straighter position overnight β€” a common conservative option before considering surgery.

View on Amazon β†’
Hammertoe

Toe Straightening Crest Pads

Gently supports a curled toe to reduce friction against the top of the shoe.

View on Amazon β†’
03 Β· Nail & skin health

Nail & Fungal Care

OTC antifungals handle mild, early cases well. Thickened, discolored, or painful nails β€” especially in diabetic patients β€” deserve an in-office look before starting any topical treatment.

Topical

OTC Antifungal Nail Treatment

A reasonable starting point for mild, early nail fungus β€” improvement takes months given how slowly nails grow.

View on Amazon β†’
Athlete's foot

Antifungal Foot Cream

For itching, peeling skin between the toes β€” pair with keeping feet dry and changing socks daily.

View on Amazon β†’
Prevention

UV Shoe Sanitizer

Helps reduce fungal and odor-causing bacteria buildup inside shoes between wears.

View on Amazon β†’
04 Β· Rough skin & pressure spots

Corns, Calluses & Warts

Fine for otherwise healthy feet with normal sensation and circulation. If you have diabetes or neuropathy, skip home callus removal tools and have these addressed in clinic instead.

Smoothing

Callus Removal File

A gentle way to manage buildup on heels and pressure points β€” not recommended if you have reduced sensation in your feet.

View on Amazon β†’
Cushioning

Corn Cushion Pads

Protective padding to relieve pressure on toe corns without any cutting or removal at home.

View on Amazon β†’
05 Β· Circulation support

Compression Socks

Good for swelling, long travel days, and standing jobs. The strongest compression isn't always the best choice β€” I've found many patients stop wearing 20–30 mmHg socks entirely because they're too hard to put on and take off, even when prescribed. A lower, more tolerable compression that actually gets worn daily often beats a stronger one sitting in a drawer.

Mild Β· 10–15 mmHg

Mild Compression Socks

The easiest to put on and take off of the bunch β€” a good starting point for patients who've struggled with higher compression, or anyone new to compression socks who wants to actually stick with wearing them.

View on Amazon β†’
Everyday Β· 15–20 mmHg

Graduated Compression Crew Socks

A moderate, all-day option for mild swelling or long shifts on your feet. Good first step before trying medical-grade compression.

View on Amazon β†’
Firm Β· 20–30 mmHg

Medical-Grade Compression Socks

What I point patients to after a procedure or for more persistent swelling. Check with your surgeon before firm compression post-op.

Sport

Compression Sleeves for Running

Calf-only sleeves for athletes who want support during activity without a full sock.

View on Amazon β†’
06 Β· Foundation

Athletic & Walking Shoes

The single highest-impact purchase for most foot and ankle complaints. Look for a firm heel counter, rocker sole for arthritis, and room in the toe box.

Stability

Stability Walking Shoes

Built-in arch support and a firmer heel β€” my usual first recommendation for plantar fasciitis flare-ups.

Wide toe box

Wide-Fit Athletic Sneakers

Extra room for bunions, hammertoes, or general forefoot crowding β€” comfort without sizing up and losing heel fit.

Rocker sole

Rocker-Bottom Recovery Shoes

Reduces forefoot pressure β€” useful during recovery from forefoot surgery or for arthritic joints (check with your surgeon on timing).

All-day standing

Supportive Clogs for Long Shifts

Rigid arch support and a rocker-friendly base β€” a common recommendation for nurses, retail workers, and anyone on their feet all day.

07 Β· Support

Insoles & Orthotic Inserts

OTC insoles handle most mild-to-moderate arch and heel complaints. Custom orthotics are a separate conversation for your appointment.

Arch support

Semi-Rigid Arch Support Insoles

A firmer, structured insole for flat feet or fatigue after long days standing.

Heel pain

Heel Cushion Inserts

Softer, gel-based cushioning for heel spurs or plantar fasciitis discomfort with each step.

View on Amazon β†’
08 Β· Alignment

Toe Spacers

Simple, low-risk tools for toe crowding, mild bunion discomfort, or as part of a stretching routine.

Silicone

Gel Toe Separators

Soft spacers for daily wear inside shoes β€” helpful for mild overlap between toes.

View on Amazon β†’
Full-foot

Correct Toes-Style Spacers

A more structured full-foot spacer, typically worn at rest or during short stretch sessions, not for walking around all day.

View on Amazon β†’
09 Β· Mobility

Foam Rollers

For calf and plantar fascia tightness β€” pairs well with a basic stretching routine.

Plantar fascia

Foot Roller (Textured)

A small textured roller for the sole of the foot β€” good for morning heel pain relief.

View on Amazon β†’
Calf & leg

Standard Foam Roller

Full-length roller for calf tightness, which often contributes to heel and arch pain.

View on Amazon β†’
10 Β· Stabilization

OTC Braces & Night Splints

Supportive, not corrective β€” these help manage symptoms while healing happens elsewhere. Ankle instability or persistent pain still deserves an exam.

Ankle

Lace-Up Ankle Brace

Common pick for mild sprains or chronic instability during activity.

Night splint

Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint

Keeps the foot in gentle stretch overnight β€” one of the more evidence-backed OTC options for morning heel pain.

Shop by condition

Ankle Sprains & Injuries

From a fresh rolled ankle to ongoing instability after a prior sprain β€” these are the products I most often reach for, organized by stage of recovery.

Acute injury

RICE Recovery Kit (Wrap, Ice Pack, Elevation Wedge)

The first 48-72 hours after a sprain matter most. A compression wrap, reusable ice pack, and elevation wedge cover the basics of early care.

View on Amazon β†’
Stabilization

Lace-Up Ankle Brace

Supports the joint during the healing phase or for anyone managing chronic mild instability from a past sprain.

View on Amazon β†’
Rehab

Resistance Band Ankle Rehab Kit

Once acute pain settles, light resistance work helps rebuild strength and proprioception β€” key for avoiding repeat sprains.

View on Amazon β†’
Balance training

Wobble Board / Balance Trainer

A standard tool in ankle rehab protocols for retraining balance and stability after an injury.

View on Amazon β†’
11 Β· Symptom relief

Ice/Cold Therapy & Heat Therapy

Ice for acute swelling, heat for stiffness β€” simple, low-risk, and easy to overuse. Never apply directly to skin without a barrier.

Acute

Ankle/Foot Ice Wrap

A wrap-style pack shaped for the ankle, easier to keep in place than a loose ice pack.

View on Amazon β†’
Chronic stiffness

Reusable Heat Wrap

Good for stiffness or tightness once acute swelling has settled down.

View on Amazon β†’
Cold compression

Cryotherapy Cold Compression System

A circulating cold-water therapy unit for more sustained, consistent cold compression than a standard ice pack β€” often used post-surgically or for stubborn swelling.

View on Amazon β†’
12 Β· Nerve & muscle

TENS Units

Over-the-counter TENS can help some muscular discomfort. It is not a treatment for nerve damage or diabetic neuropathy β€” that needs a clinical evaluation.

Portable

Basic Portable TENS Unit

Simple, adjustable-intensity unit for general muscular soreness in the foot and lower leg.

View on Amazon β†’
13 Β· Recovery

Massage Guns

Useful for calf tightness that feeds into heel and arch pain. Avoid using directly over acute injuries, fractures, or numb areas.

Named brand

Theragun Mini

The most well-known name in this category for a reason β€” compact, quiet enough for everyday use, and durable. A reliable pick if you'd rather buy once than shop around.

View on Amazon β†’
Compact

Compact Percussion Massager

Smaller, quieter option that's easy to use on calves after a long day or workout.

14 Β· Recovering well

Post-Surgical & Wound Care

The right gear at home makes a real difference in how smoothly recovery goes β€” from the incision itself to getting around the house safely. Always follow your surgeon's specific weight-bearing, dressing-change, and timeline instructions over any general product guidance.

Weight-bearing

Post-Op Surgical Shoe

A rigid-sole shoe to protect the forefoot and limit motion during early recovery, as directed by your surgeon.

View on Amazon β†’
Immobilization

Fracture/CAM Walker Boot

A rigid, removable boot for fractures or post-op immobilization β€” fit and duration should be set by your surgeon, not guesswork.

View on Amazon β†’
Incision care

Sterile Gauze & Dressing Kit

Basic sterile dressings and non-stick pads for routine at-home wound-care changes as directed by your surgical team.

View on Amazon β†’
Scar management

Silicone Scar Strips

Applied once an incision is fully closed and cleared by your surgeon β€” can help soften and flatten scar tissue over time.

View on Amazon β†’
Advanced dressing

Foam & Hydrocolloid Wound Dressings

Cushioned, moisture-managing dressings for healing incisions or minor wounds β€” follow your surgeon's specific wound-care plan.

View on Amazon β†’
Advanced dressing

Hydrogel Wound Dressings

A moisture-donating dressing for dry or slow-healing wounds β€” AmeriGel is one of several hydrogel wound dressings used for wound care.

View on Amazon β†’
Hygiene

Waterproof Cast & Bandage Cover

Lets you shower without soaking a dressing or cast β€” a small comfort that matters over weeks of recovery.

View on Amazon β†’
Mobility

Knee Scooter

Keeps weight off the foot entirely during non-weight-bearing recovery β€” often more comfortable than crutches for longer recoveries.

View on Amazon β†’
Mobility

Underarm or Forearm Crutches

The traditional standby for non-weight-bearing recovery β€” forearm crutches are often easier on the shoulders for longer-term use.

View on Amazon β†’
Mobility

Folding Walker

Extra stability for patients balancing weight-bearing precautions with a higher fall risk during recovery.

View on Amazon β†’
Mobility

Quad Cane

A wider four-point base for extra stability once a patient is ready to progress beyond a walker.

View on Amazon β†’
Mobility

Lightweight Transport Wheelchair

Useful for longer distances during non-weight-bearing recovery, or for patients who tire quickly on crutches or a scooter.

View on Amazon β†’
15 Β· Growing feet

Kids' Foot Care

Kids' feet are still developing, so persistent complaints β€” toe walking, frequent tripping, or ongoing pain β€” deserve a look rather than a wait-and-see approach.

Everyday

Supportive Kids' Sneakers

A firm heel and flexible forefoot support healthy gait development during growth spurts.

Flat feet

Kids' Arch Support Insoles

A gentler support option for flexible flat feet, common and usually harmless in younger children.

View on Amazon β†’
16 Β· Everyday upkeep

Odor & Hygiene

Small daily habits that prevent bigger problems β€” especially useful alongside the fungal and diabetic care sections above.

Footwear

Shoe Deodorizer Balls

Absorbs moisture and odor between wears β€” helps shoes last longer and stay fresher.

View on Amazon β†’
Daily wear

Moisture-Wicking Socks

Keeps feet drier throughout the day, reducing the damp environment fungus and odor-causing bacteria need to thrive.

View on Amazon β†’
17 Β· Joint stability

Knee Pain & Support

Good for mild strain, arthritis-related aching, or extra support during activity. Swelling, locking, or a knee that gives way needs an in-person exam, not just a brace.

Everyday

Compression Knee Sleeve

Light, breathable support for mild arthritis discomfort or activity-related aching.

Structured

Hinged Knee Brace

More structured support for ligament strain or instability during activity, typically used short-term.

Tendon support

Patellar Tendon Strap

A simple strap below the kneecap that can ease discomfort from jumper's knee or tendon irritation.

View on Amazon β†’
18 Β· Lower leg strain

Shin Splints & Calf Strain

Common with a sudden increase in activity. Rest and support usually help; pain that's sharp, localized to one spot, or worsening with every step can signal a stress fracture and needs an X-ray.

Support

Shin Splint Compression Sleeve

Provides light compression along the shin to ease discomfort during walking or light activity.

Calf strain

Calf Compression Sleeve

Supports a strained or fatigued calf muscle during recovery and light return to activity.

View on Amazon β†’
19 Β· Circulation & vein health

Varicose Veins & Leg Circulation

Graduated compression is the mainstay for mild venous symptoms. Rapidly worsening swelling, one-sided leg swelling, or skin discoloration needs prompt medical evaluation to rule out a clot.

Full leg

Thigh-High Compression Stockings

Graduated compression for varicose veins or general leg heaviness, especially with long periods of standing or sitting.

View on Amazon β†’
Elevation

Leg Elevation Wedge Pillow

Helps reduce end-of-day swelling by elevating the legs above heart level while resting.

View on Amazon β†’
20 Β· Newer, non-invasive options

Emerging & Evidence-Based Therapies

These are newer options patients ask me about often. I've included what the current research actually shows β€” not just marketing claims β€” so you can make an informed decision alongside your usual care, not instead of it.

FDA-cleared adjunct

Red Light Therapy Device (Photobiomodulation)

The evidence here is mixed but leans positive. Several randomized trials and meta-analyses have found red light therapy improves short-term pain and, in at least one imaging-based study, measurably reduced plantar fascia thickness. That said, at least one more recent meta-analysis pooling similar data found it didn't consistently improve overall pain or function β€” so this isn't a settled question, and results likely vary by device and protocol. If you try it, think of it as an adjunct alongside stretching and your usual care, not a replacement for it. One distinction worth knowing: the FDA clearance behind the strongest research applies to specific clinical-use lasers, not any particular consumer device β€” most home devices carry a more general clearance for muscle/joint pain and circulation. Look for a device using red and near-infrared wavelengths in the range that's actually been studied (roughly 630–660nm and 810–850nm).

View on Amazon β†’
Early-stage evidence

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) Device

Used by some patients for pain and swelling, but the research specific to foot and ankle conditions is more limited and mixed than for red light therapy. Don't use if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, and check with your physician first β€” this is one to discuss before trying, not an established first-line option.

View on Amazon β†’
21 Β· A few minutes a day

Daily Self-Care

Not tied to a specific condition β€” just the small, low-risk rituals that keep feet comfortable, soft, and easy to check for problems early. A nice complement to whatever else you're already treating.

Soak

Collapsible Foot Spa Basin

A simple basin for warm soaks β€” helps with general soreness and stiffness after a long day on your feet.

View on Amazon β†’
Soak

Epsom Salt Foot Soak

A well-known home remedy for tired, achy feet. Evidence for absorption benefits is thin, but plenty of patients find the warm soak itself relaxing.

View on Amazon β†’
Skin care

Pumice Stone / Foot File

Gentle, gradual removal of dry, thickened skin β€” a low-risk daily habit for smoother heels. Avoid if you have diabetic neuropathy or reduced sensation; ask about safer options first.

View on Amazon β†’
Moisturize

Aromatherapy Foot & Leg Balm

A cooling, peppermint- or menthol-based balm many patients like for tired legs and feet at the end of the day.

Nail care

A basic clipper, file, and cuticle tool set for routine upkeep. If you have diabetes or circulation issues, see our diabetic-safe clippers instead.
